  • Just after the band had been formed, it was decided to 'lock themsleves up' for a year in an old farmhouse. So they could focus solely on writing music and develop their own eclectic sound. Here they recorded and mixed (on a small 4-track) their first demo, which was released in 1994. Music Maker magazine called the opening track 'Epos' in one word amazing. 'An intriguing mix of jazz, rock, soul and symphonic rock.'

  • After the first demo, Friction recorded new songs in a better equipped studio, looking fo a more sophisticated sound (Dolphins). The demo, released in 1995, was short-lived as Friction kicked into high gear, winning the Tonica Music Award that year (a price for the best performing live band). The jury: 'The group stood head and shoulders above the other bands.' The award cemented their live reputation as a solid 'acid' rock band, and led to a rapidly growing following.

  • On April 3rd 1996, Friction gave a concert in club Twin Pigs in Amsterdam, which was recorded directly via the mixing desk on DAT-tape, so no post-mixing of individual tracks, but best live recording of the band. Five live tracks - that reflected the virtuosity of the band best - ended up on 'A Live'.

  • Compilation CD / Sampler at the Vijf Pijpen (Five Pipes) Festival that took place from 14 Sep till 12 Oct 1996 in 'Het Viadukt', a rehearsal space complex in the city of Groningen. The name of the festival is derived from the five chimneys (that were eventually blown up) of the Hunze power station, a stone's throw from Het Viadukt. The track Smoke is an other/older version of Walking Boots (released on the album Glow Within).

  • In the summer of '96 the band recorded their long awaited album 'Glow Within'. The release raised international media attention and serious interest from the music industry (Sony Music discussed a record deal but that fell through). As reviewed in The Daily Vault (USA): 'What amazes most is the professional quality this album has - for a debut effort, it is outstanding. Even for the few rough edges the band still has (having only been together for just under three years), they have put together a work that many established artists can only dream about. My one wish: that it had been longer.'
